Floor plan

Floor plans are positional in the purest sense: every measurement means something. They belong on a canvas, drawn to scale, with the floorplan shape library.

Once drawn, they are useful far beyond facilities: evacuation routes, equipment placement, and seating all hang off them.

#When to reach for one

  • Office moves and space planning.

  • Health and safety documentation, including evacuation routes.

  • Event and room layouts.

A quick sketch when scale genuinely does not matter.

#What to draw, in order

  • Outer walls and structural columns first; everything else hangs off them.

  • Doors and windows, with swing direction.

  • Fixed services: kitchens, bathrooms, risers, comms cabinets.

  • Furniture last, because it is the part that changes.

#A few things that catch people out

  • Set a scale before you start and note it on the diagram. Retro-fitting scale is painful.

  • Doors swing. The shape library includes the arc for a reason.

  • Keep one plan per floor and link them, rather than one enormous diagram.
