Create a diagram with AI in Confluence

To create a diagram with AI in Confluence, insert Diagram (Capable), select Studio (or Generate in the library picker) and describe the diagram you want. Diagram Studio writes it as real diagram source, in a language that suits it, such as Mermaid, PlantUML, draw.io or D2. Open it in the editor, check it, then save it.

#Before you start

You need

Why

Edit permission on the page

You create the diagram while editing the page.

AI turned on for your site

If an administrator has switched off AI integrations, Studio and Generate are hidden. See Turn off AI diagramming in Confluence.

The standard Capable app

Studio is not offered in the Zero Egress edition of Capable Diagrams.

#Steps

  1. Edit the page, type /diagram and choose Diagram (Capable).

  2. Select Studio at the top of the list, or Generate in the library picker.

  3. In Describe the diagram you want..., say what the diagram shows, the steps or parts, and how they connect.

  4. To choose the language, start with it, for example /mermaid, /plantuml, /drawio or /d2. Type /page to build the diagram from the page you are on.

  5. When the result appears, select Edit in editor. The diagram opens in its normal editor.

  6. Check the relationships and labels, give the diagram a title, then select Save and publish the page.

#What happens next

The result is an ordinary Capable diagram. Edit it by hand, comment on it, export it or save it as a template, exactly like a diagram you drew yourself. Nothing is locked to AI.

#If it does not work

  • No Studio or Generate: AI is switched off for your site, or you are on the Zero Egress edition.

  • The diagram came back in the wrong language: ask for it by name, such as /plantuml, at the start of your description.

  • Relationships are plausible but wrong: the AI only knows what you tell it. Add detail and ask again. See Writing diagram prompts.
