Restrict who can edit a diagram in Confluence

A Capable diagram uses the permissions of the page it is on, so to control who can edit a diagram in Confluence you restrict editing of that page. To protect one diagram on an otherwise open page, keep the diagram on a restricted page and show it on the open page with a reference.

#Before you start

  • You need permission to change restrictions on the page, which Confluence gives to the page's editors and space administrators.

  • Decide whether the whole page should be locked, or only the diagram. For only the diagram, read Restrict a diagram first.

#Steps

  1. Open the page that holds the diagram.

  2. Open the page's restrictions with the padlock at the top of the page.

  3. Choose the option that lets everyone view but only some people edit, and add the people or groups who should be able to change it.

  4. Apply the restriction.

  5. Check it: ask someone without edit access to open the diagram. They can view it, but the Edit diagram button is not shown to them.

#What happens next

  • The restriction applies to the diagram at once. There is no separate step in Capable.

  • People without edit access can still read the diagram's comments, but cannot add any. They see Only people who can edit this diagram can comment.

  • They also cannot add the diagram to a collection or take it out of one.

  • A reference to this diagram on another page follows this page's permissions, not the other page's.

Lock the page, and the diagram follows.
