Publish several Confluence spaces as one site

To publish several Confluence spaces as one site, open the site's Settings in Capable Sites, choose Spaces & URLs and select Add space. Drag the spaces into order and pick a home space. Then choose a navigation Style under Navigation, optionally group spaces into categories, and run Update and Promote.

#Before you start

You need

Why

A Confluence admin

Only admins can add spaces, reorder them, or change slugs, public names and the home space. Collaborators can change the navigation style and categories.

An existing site

To start from scratch, add all the spaces in the Scope step of the create wizard instead.

At most 100 spaces

That is the limit per site, though navigation gets crowded long before it.

Spaces you have checked

Confluence page restrictions do not carry over. Every page in an added space is published unless it has the capable-sites-exclude label.

#Steps

  1. Open Capable and choose Sites. Expand your site in the sidebar and select Settings.

  2. Select Spaces & URLs, then Add space, and choose the spaces to publish.

  3. Drag the rows into the order visitors should see. This is the navigation order.

  4. Optionally change a space's Public name or URL slug. Select the house button on the space the site should open on.

  5. Select Save changes, then Settings to go back.

  6. Select Navigation and pick a Style: Switcher, Tabs or Sidebar picker. Turn on Space avatars to show each space's icon.

  7. Optionally select Add category, name it, and drag spaces into it. Then select Save changes.

  8. On the site's Overview, select Update. Check the staging preview, then select Promote and Promote to production.

#Which navigation style to choose

Style

Best for

Switcher

A handful of spaces. A space menu sits in the site header.

Tabs

When every space should be visible at once. A bar of spaces sits under the header.

Sidebar picker

Lots of spaces. A space card above the page tree opens a searchable list.

#What happens next

After you promote, each space lives under its own slug, such as /docs/, and the navigation lists the spaces in your order. Spaces outside any category come first, then each category under its heading. Categories are headings only: they have no page of their own and never nest. Without a home space, the site opens on a generated page with a card for each space.

#A few things that catch people out

Many spaces. One site. One navigation.
