Write maths equations with LaTeX in Confluence

To write a maths equation in Confluence, insert the LaTeX math (Capable) macro and type the formula in LaTeX into Latex Equation, for example E = mc^2. The preview renders as you type. Choose Align and Font Size, then publish. For a formula inside a sentence, use LaTeX math inline (Capable).

#Before you start

  • You need permission to edit the page.

  • Capable Formatting, or the Capable suite, must be installed on your Confluence site.

  • Type the expression without surrounding $ signs.

#Steps

  1. Edit the page, type /latex and choose LaTeX math (Capable), or LaTeX math macro (Capable) in the standalone app.

  2. Enter the LaTeX in Latex Equation and check the preview.

  3. Choose Align and Font Size. On the Style tab, set an Equation colour if you do not want the page text colour.

  4. For a formula inside a sentence, place the cursor there and insert LaTeX math inline (Capable) (LaTeX inline macro (Capable) in the standalone app) instead.

  5. Publish the page and check the formula renders.

#A few things that catch people out

  • Generate in the block macro drafts LaTeX from a plain-language description, if AI is turned on for your site.

  • There is no automatic equation numbering or cross-referencing.

  • Moving from another maths app? See Migrating to Capable Formatting.
