Add a background colour or image to a Confluence page

To add a background colour or image to a Confluence page, insert the Background (Capable) macro and write or paste your content inside it. On the Content tab choose an image from attachments, a web address or Unsplash, or leave it empty for a plain colour. Set the position and opacity there, and the height and colours on the Style tab.

#Before you start

  • You need permission to edit the page.

  • Capable Formatting, or the Capable suite, must be installed on your Confluence site.

  • Confluence does not let you colour the whole page. The macro colours the section you put inside it.

#Steps

  1. Edit the page, type /background and choose Background (Capable), or Background macro (Capable) in the standalone app.

  2. Close the panel and type, paste or insert content inside the macro's body.

  3. Open the macro settings. Under Image, select a file from attachments, paste an image address, or search Unsplash. Leave it empty for colour only.

  4. Set the image Position and Image opacity.

  5. On the Style tab, set the Background and Text colours, a Height (Wrap, Medium, Large or Custom), Side padding and Text alignment, then publish.

#A few things that catch people out

  • Lower the Image opacity if text over a busy photo is hard to read.

  • A background image from a website that is not approved does not load. Attach the file to the page instead.

Colour where it helps, not everywhere.
