Frequently asked questions about images in Confluence
Short answers to the questions we hear most, each with a link to the page that explains it properly.
#The library
#Does Capable Images compress my images?
No. Uploaded files are kept exactly as you uploaded them; only the thumbnail used for browsing is made smaller. Page attachments over 3 MB are made smaller when you import them into the library, and so are large images saved from the editor. See Upload.
#Why will the Upload button not let me pick an SVG?
Its file picker does not offer SVG, ICO or JFIF. Drag those files onto the library instead. See the troubleshooting page.
#If I delete a folder, are its images deleted?
No. Deleting a folder removes only the folder. See Deleted a folder and the images that were in it are unaccounted for.
#Who can change the global image library?
Anyone with add and delete permission in the space that stores global images. A site administrator manages that from Capable's settings. See Images settings.
#Can I turn Images off for a single space?
No. Images can be hidden for the whole site, not per space. See Cannot turn Images off for a single space.
#Images on pages
#How do I annotate an image?
Insert one page attachment or stock photo with the Image macro and choose Edit first to crop and add arrows, boxes and text. See Annotate an image in Confluence.
#Why does a page say This image could not be found?
The library image it referenced was deleted. Insert another image, and next time upload a new version rather than deleting. See Page shows This image could not be found.
#Why do logged-out visitors see Sign in to view this image?
Library references are loaded for each signed-in reader. For public pages, insert a plain copy instead. See Two insert modes.
#Why did a Banner or Cards image not change when I updated it in the library?
Formatting macros store a direct link to the file, not a reference, so they keep the version you picked. Pick the image again in that macro. See the troubleshooting page.
#Why is my gallery missing from a PDF or Word export?
Galleries are loaded live when the page is viewed, so exports cannot include them. Use plain images for content that must export. See Gallery does not appear in a PDF or Word export.
#Why is a page missing from Used on Pages?
Only Image reference macros are counted, at most 25 pages are shown, and a very recent edit may not be indexed yet. See Used on Pages.
