Annotate an image in Confluence

To annotate an image in Confluence, open the Image (Capable) insert dialog, select one page attachment or stock photo and insert it, then choose Edit first. The editor lets you crop, rotate, and draw rectangles, arrows and text over the image. Click Insert image and the annotated version goes onto the page.

#Before you start

  • You need permission to edit the page.

  • The prompt to edit appears when you insert exactly one page attachment or one stock photo.

  • Images over 3 MB cannot be edited first. Insert them directly instead.

#Steps

  1. Open the page in the editor, type /image and choose Image (Capable), or Images macro (Capable) in the standalone app. The insert dialog opens.

  2. Under Attached images or Stock images, select one image.

  3. Click the insert button (it reads Insert 1 images).

  4. In Edit before inserting?, click Edit first.

  5. Use the tools on the left: Crop (C), Rectangle (R), Arrow (A) and Text (T). Rotate, change colour and thickness, or undo as you go.

  6. Click Insert image.

#What happens next

The annotated image is attached to the page as a new file and shown there. The original attachment or stock photo is left unchanged, so you can annotate it again differently later.

#If it does not work

  • No Edit first prompt. You selected more than one image, or a library image. Select a single page attachment or stock photo.

  • The image cannot be edited. It is larger than 3 MB. Insert it directly, or upload a smaller copy.
