Set up Slack notifications for Confluence approvals

To get Confluence approval requests in Slack, a Confluence administrator opens Capable's Global settings, selects the Notifications tab, turns on the connect switch on the Slack card and authorises the Capable app in Slack. Direct messages start straight away, and Slack approval actions adds buttons so people can answer in Slack.

#Before you start

You need

Why

A Confluence administrator

Global settings is for administrators only.

Somebody who can add apps to your Slack workspace

Slack asks you to authorise the Capable app.

Approvers whose Confluence and Slack email addresses match

Capable finds people in Slack by their Confluence email.

#Steps

  1. Open Global settings. Site administrators find it under Manage in the Approval sidebar, or in Confluence administration.

  2. Select the Notifications tab.

  3. On the Slack card, turn on the connect switch.

  4. Authorise the Capable app in Slack when asked.

  5. To let people answer from Slack, turn on Slack approval actions on the same card.

#What happens next

From now on, people asked to approve a page get a direct message from Capable in Slack, as well as the email. To post a whole space's approval activity into a channel, see Post Confluence approval updates to a Slack channel.

#If it does not work

  • One person gets nothing: check their Confluence and Slack email addresses match, and that they have not switched off Send me Slack notifications.

  • Messages arrive but have no buttons: turn on Slack approval actions, or the space requires an authenticator code, which Slack cannot collect.

  • Nobody gets anything: check Slack integration is on, on the Slack card.

Reviews move at the speed of a Slack message.
