Track Confluence searches, comments and edits in Google Analytics

To track Confluence searches, comments, page creates and edits, and reactions in Google Analytics, add a Measurement Protocol API secret. On the Google Analytics configuration page, under Enhanced tracking, select an existing secret or select the + button to create one. It saves at once, and the extra events start flowing.

#Before you start

  • You are a Confluence administrator.

  • Google Analytics is already added, with a measurement ID saved. See Add Google Analytics to Confluence.

  • Google is connected and a Data stream is selected, so the app can list or create secrets on that stream. Without a connection you can still paste a secret by hand.

#Steps

  1. Open Confluence Settings and select Google Analytics.

  2. Go to Enhanced tracking and find Measurement Protocol API secret.

  3. Pick an existing secret from the list, or select the + button (Create API secret) to make a new one.

  4. If Google asks for it, read the terms under Google Analytics needs your acknowledgement and select I acknowledge.

  5. Wait for Measurement Protocol API secret created and saved. or API secret applied and saved.

#What happens next

The Feature status panel shows Search queries, Comments added, Page created / updated and Reactions & likes as on. These events are sent from Capable's servers, so they arrive even when a browser blocks Google's script. Sync the custom dimensions next so reports can group the events by space and page.

#If it does not work

  • The list shows No secrets yet: use the + button to create one.

  • Select a data stream first.: pick a stream under View tracking, then try again.

  • The acknowledgement fails: accept it in Google Analytics instead, from the link in the dialog, then come back and create the secret.

More than page views, from one secret.
