Sync Google Analytics custom dimensions for Confluence
To sync Google Analytics custom dimensions for Confluence, open the Google Analytics configuration page, find Custom dimensions (GA4) under Enhanced tracking, and select Sync dimensions. The app creates whatever is missing in your GA4 property. Five dimensions are required for the core reports; the rest each unlock an extra filter.
#Before you start
You are a Confluence administrator.
Google is connected and a GA4 property is chosen. The dimensions section only appears once both are done.
Your Google account can edit the property's custom definitions.
#Steps
Open Confluence Settings and select Google Analytics.
Go to Enhanced tracking and find Custom dimensions (GA4).
Select Sync dimensions. If some are missing, the button reads Sync 3 missing or similar.
Wait for Custom dimensions configured in Google Analytics.
Select Refresh to check that every row in the table is set up.
Syncing adds only what is missing. It never renames a dimension you have already changed in Google Analytics, so it is safe to run again at any time.
#What happens next
Google takes up to 48 hours to start reporting on new dimensions. Until then the reports show Extra reporting dimensions are set up and collecting. They appear here within 48 hours. Once all the optional ones are synced, Extra report filters turns on in Feature status, and the report filters for sources, guests and account types appear.
Dimensions | What they give you |
|---|---|
Five required: Space Key, User Account ID (hashed), Content ID, Content Type, Content Version | The core Spaces, Content and People reports. |
Optional: Instance, Site Host, Where Displayed, Account Type, Guest, Search Results, Attachment, File Type, Collector, User Account Id | Extra filters and columns, such as where a page was read (Confluence or a published site), guests versus internal users, and attachment file types. User Account Id only fills when Send Atlassian account IDs to Google Analytics is on. |
#If it does not work
The section is missing: connect Google and choose a GA4 property first.
Sync fails with a permissions error: the connected Google account needs Editor access on the property.
