Your first search

The fastest way to understand this is to run a search Confluence could not: every page over two thousand words that nobody has updated this year.

That takes two filters and about a minute.

#Step by step

The Capable Search window with filter chips for Spaces, Contributors, Updated At, Labels and Macros above a results table; the Labels chip is open, listing labels such as approval-adder, campaign, col
Each chip in the bar opens its own list of values, so picking a label narrows the table without writing a query.

Capable is opened from the Apps menu in the Confluence sidebar, where it may be listed as Content Manager.

Step

What you do

1

Open Capable, then Search.

2

Filter by space, so you are looking at something you recognise.

3

Add a word count filter. That column comes from the Word count capability.

4

Add a last-updated filter.

5

Sort by word count, longest first.

6

Save the search, and give it a name somebody else would understand.

#What to try next

A Confluence page open in the editor with a Capable Search Results macro below a warning panel, rendering a table of ten pages with title, created by, collaborators, last updated and words, and a head
A search can be dropped onto a page with the search results macro, where it renders as a table that stays current.
  • Put the saved search on a page with the search table macro, so it stays current without anybody maintaining it.

  • Filter by link domain to find every page pointing at a service you are retiring.

  • Filter by diagram language to find every page with a draw.io diagram on it.

#A few things worth knowing

  • Saved searches are objects, not bookmarks. Renaming or re-scoping one changes it everywhere it is used.

  • The Copy CQL action gives you the exact query, which is the easiest way to reuse it in Confluence search.

  • Permissions always apply. You cannot find a page you could not already open.
