Find and replace text across Confluence pages
To find and replace text across Confluence pages, run a search in Capable Search, select Bulk Change and tick the pages. Choose Find & replace text, fill in Find text and Replace with, select Check to count matches, then Replace text. Only text in paragraphs is changed.
#Before you start
You need | Why |
|---|---|
Capable Search installed | The app is part of Capable Search for Confluence and the Capable Suite. |
A wide enough window | Bulk Change is hidden on narrow screens such as phones. |
Edit permission on the pages | Pages you cannot edit fail and are listed. |
#Steps
Open Capable Search: select Capable Search in the space sidebar or the Apps menu (in the Suite, Capable, then Search).
Run a search that finds the pages you want to change.
Select Bulk Change in the footer under the table.
Tick each page you want to change.
Open the Change N pages menu and select Find & replace text.
In Find text, type the exact text. In Replace with, type the new text, or leave it empty to remove the text.
Tick Match case if capital letters matter.
Select Check to see how many matches each page has.
Select Replace text and wait for every page to finish.
#If it does not work
Only paragraphs are changed, including paragraphs inside tables, panels and lists. Headings, page titles and macro settings are left alone.
A phrase that is partly bold or partly a link will not match, because the formatting splits it.
Each changed page gets a new version, so you can restore the previous one from the page history.
