Everything else
Start from what you are seeing rather than from what you think is broken. Each page below names the symptom, explains why it happens, and says what to do about it.
Several of these are the product working as designed, which is worth knowing before anybody raises a ticket.
#At a glance
Symptom | Usually because |
|---|---|
Turned off "Show Line Numbers" but the line-number gutter is still there | The Show Line Numbers setting currently has no effect, in either direction, so the gutter stays as it is. |
Set a Title in the Browse GitHub picker but no heading appears on the page | The title is saved but never shown. The macro header always shows the owner, repository and file path instead. |
Turned "Show Border" off (or on) and the file looks exactly the same | Show Border only affects the macro's non-content states: the unconfigured "Select File" prompt, and the signed-out, not-connected and error cards. A file that loads successfully never has a border. |
Re-picked the file through Browse GitHub and my Show Border and Show Line Numbers choices reset | Saving from the picker starts the configuration afresh with Show Border and Show Line Numbers both switched on, so earlier choices are overwritten. |
Pasted a link with a line range like #L10-L20 but the whole file is shown | The macro has no line-range setting, so the line numbers in the link are dropped. |
Pasted a GitHub URL and it did not turn into a macro | Only github.com /blob/ links and raw.githubusercontent.com links convert automatically, and only up to 10 path segments after the branch. Directory (tree/) links, gist links and GitHub Enterprise hosts do not convert. |
Pasted a link like github.com/owner/repo/blob/refs/heads/main/file.md and the macro is broken | Automatic conversion reads the third path segment as the branch, so it takes "refs" as the branch and "heads/main/file.md" as the file path. |
Signed-out readers see a sign-in notice instead of the file | Signed-out readers can only see files from public repositories. This is deliberate, so a stranger is never met with a GitHub sign-in window. |
Disconnect button does nothing | The Disconnect button shows a message telling you where to go instead of disconnecting. |
GitHub asks me to authorise again every single time, even though I already connected | The authorisation step always asks for consent, and most paths in the app request a fresh connection. |
Connection stopped working and I have to reconnect from scratch | An expired connection cannot be renewed silently, so you need to reconnect. |
File on the page changed even though nobody edited the Confluence page | The macro is a live window, not a snapshot. It fetches the file fresh each time someone views the page, from the branch you configured, and nothing is stored in the page. |
Macro shows an error, and the file used to be there | The file was deleted or renamed, or the branch was renamed or removed. Because the file is fetched live, you see the error straight away. |
Filtered search by File Type "ts" (or "py") as the help text suggests and got no results | The help text mentions file extensions, but search filters by a broad category. The categories are markdown, diagram, code, text, config, markup, data and image. |
