Match Jira issues to Attio companies by email domain

To match Jira issues to Attio companies by email domain, open the project's Attio settings, choose Match their company on Matching, pick your Companies object as the record type, and choose the Attribute holding the domain. Only the part after the @ is looked up, so everyone at a customer resolves to the same company record, and free-mail domains are never matched.

#Before you start

  • You are a project administrator and Attio is connected. See Connect Attio to a Jira project.

  • Your Attio companies carry a domain, ideally in Attio's own domain attribute.

  • Jira can read reporter email addresses on your site.

#Steps

  1. Open the project's Project settings, Apps, Attio, and go to Matching.

  2. Choose Match their company. If you were matching something else, confirm with Match their company instead. This clears the record type and everything chosen after it.

  3. On Record type, choose the object that holds companies, usually Companies.

  4. Back on Matching, choose the Attribute holding the domain.

  5. Optionally add entries under Domains this project ignores or Domains to match anyway.

  6. Choose the fields again on Fields, then select Next through the remaining steps, or Save changes on the tabs.

#What happens next

Every issue raised by someone at a customer's domain shows that company's record. A reporter at mail.acme.co.uk still finds a company stored as acme.co.uk, because the registrable domain is compared. A reporter on a free-mail domain such as Gmail gets no match, because a personal address says nothing about the company.

#If it does not work

  • No company matches: check the domain is stored on the record. A text attribute is compared whole, so Attio's domain attribute type is the more forgiving choice.

  • A sole trader uses a free-mail address as their company domain: add it under Domains to match anyway.

  • Two or three companies share the domain: the card lists them side by side so the reader can pick the right one. More than three are refused, because the card cannot say which is the customer. See More than one record matches this reporter.

One customer, one record, however many people write in.
