Managing diagram templates

Capable Diagrams allows you to create and manage reusable templates directly from the Template Library, making it easy to standardize diagrams across your organization. Templates can be stored at either the space or global level, ensuring the right level of access for your team’s needs.

Creating a Diagram Template

To create a new diagram template:

  1. Navigate to the Template Library

    • For Space-Level Templates: Go to the designated space, open the Capable Diagram settings, and access the Space Template Library.

    • For Global Templates: Navigate to the Global Template Library in your Confluence administration settings.

  2. Add a New Template
In the library, click Create New Template.

  3. Design the Template

    • Use the visual editor or code-based frameworks like Mermaid or PlantUML to design your diagram.

    • Add any placeholders or default elements that teams can customize when using the template.

  4. Save the Template

    • Assign a Template Name that reflects its purpose.

    • Specify whether it should be a Space or Global template.

  5. Publish the Template
Save the template, and it will now be available in the selected library.

  4. Save and Publish
Save your changes and publish the customized diagram to the Confluence page.

Managing Template Libraries

Searching and Filtering

Use the Template Library to search for templates by name, tag, or keywords. You can filter results by scope (space or global) to find templates faster.

Editing Templates

To update an existing template:

  1. Open the template from the Template Library.

  2. Edit the diagram as needed.

  3. Save your changes, either overwriting the template or creating a new version.

Deleting Templates

To delete a template:

  1. Access the Template Library.

  2. Locate the template you want to remove, click on it, then the '…' button in the top right and click Delete.

Note: Diagrams created using a template will not be affected by deleting the template.

Best Practices for Diagram Templates

  • Use Clear Naming Conventions: Consistent names help users quickly identify the right template.

  • Regularly Review Templates: Update templates to ensure they meet current team standards and needs.

  • Scope Appropriately: Use space templates for team-specific diagrams and global templates for company-wide standards.

By managing templates effectively, you can save time, improve consistency, and empower teams to create professional diagrams effortlessly.
