# Your first site

Creating a site is a wizard: name it, choose the spaces, theme it, decide who can see it, and create. It takes a few minutes and nothing is public until you promote.

Two of the five steps are decisions you cannot easily change later, so they are worth taking slowly.

## The five steps

| 1\. Overview | Site name, web address, and a description used for search and social previews |
| 2\. Scope    | Which spaces, in which order, with a URL slug each, and which is the homepage |
| 3\. Theme    | A palette, a logo, a font, seven colours, and three display switches          |
| 4\. Access   | Public, password protected, or login with Atlassian                           |
| 5\. Create   | Review, and optionally publish straight away                                  |

⚠️

**The web address cannot be changed after creation.** Settings shows it read-only. Choose it as carefully as you would a domain.

## Step 2 decides your navigation

The order you put the spaces in is the order they appear in the site navigation. Drag them, or use the up and down buttons. Each space gets a URL slug, and two spaces cannot claim the same one.

## What Create actually does

Pressing Create runs a visible checklist: create the site, upload the logo, apply the theme and URLs, turn on password protection or Atlassian sign-in, and, if you ticked the box, start the first publish.

ℹ️

**Even with "Publish it right away" ticked, the live address is not up yet.** That first publish is an Update, which builds the staging preview. You still have to Promote.

## A few things worth knowing

* Address availability is checked live, and some addresses are refused by a safety check.
* You can add up to 100 spaces, but the navigation gets unwieldy long before that.
* Only Confluence admins can create a site. At the edition cap the button is relabelled rather than hidden.
