# Cannot save my publishing settings, or bulk publish is greyed out, and I am told a maintenance task

**What you are seeing**

I cannot save my publishing settings, or bulk publish is greyed out, and I am told a maintenance task is running.

## Why it happens

A cleanup or rebuild is in progress for that space. Saving throws "A maintenance task (cleanup or rebuild) is currently running for this space" and the maintenance cards say "Cannot publish while a maintenance task is running.".

## What to do

Wait for the task to finish. Watch it on the Publishing space page Dashboard. Then save. Note the block is best-effort: if the background tables cannot be read at all, the save is allowed through.

## A few things that catch people out

* The "children" configuration value does nothing. It exists in the stored settings, is annotated as being there only for future features, and no code reads it.
