# Update an image everywhere it is used in Confluence To update an image everywhere it is used in Confluence, open it in the Capable Images library and upload a new version. Every page that shows it with the **Image reference** macro, or as a library reference in a Markdown document, picks up the new file automatically. Check **Used on Pages** first to see which pages that will be. --- ## Before you start * You need permission to upload to the library the image lives in. * Only references follow the library. Images inserted as plain copies, and images picked inside Formatting macros, keep the old file. --- ## Steps 1. Open **Capable Images** and find the image in its library or folder. 2. Open the image. 3. Look at **Used on Pages** to see which pages reference it. 4. Click **Upload** (tooltip **Upload new version**) and pick the replacement file. 5. Open one of the listed pages to check the new version shows. --- ## If it does not work * **A page still shows the old image.** That page has a plain copy, not a reference. Replace it with the **Image reference** macro so it follows future updates. * **A page I know uses it is not listed.** **Used on Pages** only counts reference macros, shows at most 25 pages, and can lag behind a very recent edit. ⚠️ Do not delete the old image to replace it. Every reference to a deleted image shows **This image could not be found**. Upload a new version instead. --- ## Related ### [Version an image in place](https://help.gocapable.com/images/version-an-image-in-place.html) Versioning in full. ### [Used on Pages](https://help.gocapable.com/images/used-on-pages.html) Which pages use an image. ### [Image reference](https://help.gocapable.com/images/image-reference.html) The macro that follows the library. ### [Building a Confluence image library](https://help.gocapable.com/images/building-a-confluence-image-library.html) More guides for the image library. --- _Change it once.
