# Two insert modes

'Insert N references' places Image reference macros (live links). 'Insert N images' places native Confluence image nodes (frozen copies that render in exports and for logged-out readers). The references button is disabled whenever any non-library item is selected.

With three images ticked the footer offers both routes, references that stay linked to the library or copies frozen into the page.

## Worth knowing

A reference lands on the page as its own macro node with alignment and edit controls, not as a plain image.

* An image edited before insert is limited to 3 MB, matching the server's editor read cap.
