# What Capable Google Analytics is

Google Analytics for Confluence (by Capable) connects your Confluence Cloud site to your own Google Analytics 4 property, then shows the resulting traffic data back inside Confluence. Tracking is site-wide and invisible: a hidden background script loads Google's own gtag.js in every reader's browser and records a page view for each page they open, tagged with the space key, page id, page type, page version and a one-way hashed version of the reader's Atlassian account id.

Logged-out readers of public pages are tracked too (recorded as "anonymous"). Optionally, the app can also send server-side events for searches, comments and page create/update, which needs an extra Measurement Protocol API secret. You read the data back through a global reports page, a per-space reports page, and a "Google Analytics (Capable)" macro you can drop onto any page.

Reading reports requires connecting a Google account once, at site level. Pages you publish outside Confluence can be tracked too: Capable Sites has a switch in its own settings, and Refined and Scroll Viewport get a copy-paste snippet.

You also retain the full power of Google Analytics to perform deeper analysis on your data and to continue using its existing integrations, such as Looker Studio, for more advanced reporting and visualisation.

## A few things worth knowing

* Anonymous, logged-out readers of public pages ARE tracked, by design, and there is no per-reader opt-out inside Confluence. Their browsers contact both Google and Capable. They are recorded as "anonymous" with no Google user id.
* The app respects a users ‘block tracking’ in their browser. If you are using this inside your company, you can allow this at an organisational level by allowing the scripts on your domain.
* "Allowed groups" restricts who can READ reports. It never restricts who is tracked. Excluded users and anonymous readers keep being recorded.
