# Google Analytics for Confluence FAQ Quick answers about tracking, reports, privacy and published sites. Each one links to the page with the detail. --- ### Do I need to connect my Google account to track Confluence? No. A measurement ID on its own records page views. Connecting Google is what adds the reports inside Confluence, the data stream picker, the Measurement Protocol secret and the custom dimensions. See [Add Google Analytics to Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/add-google-analytics-to-confluence.html). ### Why are my reports empty right after setup? Google takes up to 48 hours to process new events and new custom dimensions. Use **Run live check** in **Tracking diagnostics** to confirm data is arriving in the meantime. See [Check Google Analytics is tracking Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/check-google-analytics-is-tracking-confluence.html). ### Why do the figures in Confluence lag behind Google Analytics? The app keeps each report it fetches from Google for up to an hour, so it does not ask Google again on every page load. **Live events** in Page analytics and the realtime checks are not held back this way. ### Are logged-out readers of public pages tracked? Yes. Anonymous readers are tracked like everyone else and recorded as anonymous. See [Anonymous reader tracking](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/anonymous-reader-tracking.html). ### Who can see the analytics in Confluence? Only Confluence admins, until an admin changes **Who can view reports** to specific groups or all logged-in users. See [Choose who can view Google Analytics reports in Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/choose-who-can-view-google-analytics-reports-in-confluence.html). ### Does Google Analytics learn who viewed each page? Not by default. Each person is sent as a one-way hash, and the **People** report recovers names by hashing your own user directory. Turning on **Send Atlassian account IDs to Google Analytics** sends the raw account ID too, which is your decision and your privacy notice to cover. ### Why can I not see the Searches or Raw tabs? They can reveal search terms and URLs, so they stay hidden until an admin turns on **Show sensitive data panels**. See [Google Analytics settings](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/google-analytics-settings.html). ### Does turning off reports stop tracking? No. **Turn off Google Analytics reports in Confluence** switches off the report pages, Page analytics and the macro, but page views keep going to Google. Clear the measurement ID to stop tracking. See [Turn off Google Analytics reports in Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/turn-off-google-analytics-reports-in-confluence.html). ### Why does someone see "You do not have access to analytics for this site."? They are not in the audience set under **Who can view reports**. Add their group, save, and give it a few minutes. See [Permissions and access](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/permissions-and-access.html). ### Can I still use a Universal Analytics ID? The settings accept one with **Use UA tag instead**, but Google stopped processing Universal Analytics data in 2023, and the server-side events only work with a GA4 ID. Use a GA4 property. ### Should I turn on Allow Google Ads signals? Leave it off. If your property links Google Ads, the Google tag tries to load extra scripts that cannot work inside Confluence and only produce console errors. Page views reach Google Analytics either way. ### Is there a cookie banner inside Confluence? No. The app does not show a consent banner in Confluence, and it denies Google's advertising storage by default. Sites published with Capable Sites have their own cookie consent popup. See [Published site tracking (Capable Sites)](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/published-site-tracking-capable-sites.html). ### Can I track a site published with Refined or Scroll Viewport? Yes. Copy the snippet from **Published site generators** on the settings page into the site generator. See [Published site tracking (Refined, Scroll Viewport)](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/published-site-tracking-refined-scroll-viewport.html). --- ## Related ### [Setting up Google Analytics for Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/setting-up-google-analytics-for-confluence.html) Connect, track and sync. ### [Viewing Confluence analytics](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/viewing-confluence-analytics.html) Reports, the macro and Page analytics. ### [Confluence analytics access and privacy](https://help.gocapable.com/google-analytics/confluence-analytics-access-and-privacy.html) Who sees reports, and what is sent. --- _Short answers first, detail one click away._
