# Refresh a GitHub file on a Confluence page To refresh a GitHub file on a Confluence page, select **Refresh content**, the circular-arrow button at the right of the macro's header. The macro fetches the file from GitHub again and redraws it. You rarely need to: the macro already reads the file fresh every time the page is opened, so a reload does the same thing. --- ## Before you start * You are signed in to Confluence. Logged-out readers do not get the **Refresh content** button; they see the latest file each time they open the page. * For a private file, you have a connected GitHub account with access. --- ## Steps 1. Open the page that holds the Github file macro. You do not need to edit it. 2. Find the macro's header, which shows the repository and path. 3. Select **Refresh content** at the right of the header. --- ## What happens next The file reloads in place. If GitHub cannot be reached, the macro shows the error with a **Retry** button, and **Configure** for people who can edit. 📝 Seeing an old version even after a refresh? The macro shows the branch, tag or commit it was set to. A tag or commit never changes. Check the ref in brackets after the path, and point the macro at a branch if you want it to follow new commits.
