# Connect your GitHub account to Confluence To connect your GitHub account to Confluence, select **Connect GitHub** on any Github file macro, or **Connect** in the Browse Git Repositories window, and authorise the app in the GitHub window that opens. Each person connects their own account. There is no site-wide connection, so you only ever see repositories you can already open on GitHub. --- ## Before you start | **Who** | **What they need** | | ----------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Anyone signed in to Confluence | A GitHub account. No Confluence or GitHub admin rights are needed. | | Organisations with OAuth app restrictions | A GitHub organisation owner may need to approve the app before its private repositories appear. | --- ## Steps 1. Open any page with a Github file macro, or add one: edit a page, type **/Github** and choose **Github file (Capable)**. 2. Select **Connect GitHub** on the macro, or select **Select File** and then **Connect** under **Connect to Git Providers**. 3. In the GitHub window, check the account shown and select **Authorize**. 4. Wait for the window to close. The macro loads the file, or the picker lists your repositories. --- ## What happens next Capable asks GitHub for `repo`, `user:email`, `read:org` and `read:user`. It only reads; it never writes to your repositories. Private files you can read now render for you. Other readers still need their own connection. * GitHub asks you to approve the app every time you connect, even if you have connected before. That is deliberate. See [Consent behaviour](https://help.gocapable.com/git/consent-behaviour.html). * If you do not finish in GitHub within 30 seconds, Capable stops waiting. Start again. --- ## If it does not work * [GitHub asks me to authorise again every single time](https://help.gocapable.com/git/github-asks-me-to-authorise-again-every-single-time-even-though-i-already-connected.html) * [Macro says none of my accounts have access, but I am certain I do](https://help.gocapable.com/git/macro-says-none-of-my-accounts-have-access-but-i-am-certain-i-do.html) * [Admin wants to connect GitHub once on behalf of the whole site](https://help.gocapable.com/git/admin-wants-to-connect-github-once-on-behalf-of-the-whole-site-and-cannot-find-the-setting.html) --- ## Related ### [Connect flow](https://help.gocapable.com/git/connect-flow.html) Where and how connecting works. ### [OAuth scopes requested](https://help.gocapable.com/git/oauth-scopes-requested.html) What each permission is for. ### [Use more than one GitHub account in Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/git/use-more-than-one-github-account-in-confluence.html) Work and personal accounts together. ### [Disconnect GitHub from Confluence](https://help.gocapable.com/git/disconnect-github-from-confluence.html) Unlink it again. ### [Authentication model](https://help.gocapable.com/git/authentication-model.html) Per person, never shared. --- _Your account, your repositories, nobody else's._
