# Global template library

Templates turn a good diagram into a reusable starting point. A global template is available in every space, which is what makes standardisation stick.

The important word is starting: inserting a template copies it, so the new diagram is independent and freely editable.

## When you would change this

* Rolling out a house style for architecture or process diagrams.
* Giving people a correct starting point instead of a blank canvas.
* Capturing a diagram somebody drew well so others can reuse it.

## What you can set

| **Setting**      | **What it does**                                                 |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Global templates | Available in every space. Managed by a Confluence administrator. |
| Space templates  | Available in one space. Managed by a space administrator.        |
| What insert does | Copies the template. The new diagram is independent.             |
| Indexing         | A new template takes a few minutes to appear in the picker.      |

## A few things that catch people out

* Changing a template never changes diagrams already created from it. That is deliberate.
* A new template will not appear instantly; indexing takes a few minutes.
