# Diagram is clipped or the wrong size

Sizing complaints are nearly always the display mode, which is a single setting with four values. Once you know what each one does, the fix takes seconds.

The setting can be changed for one diagram, or for a whole space at once.

## What you are seeing

* The diagram is cut off at the edge.
* A small diagram is blown up and looks blurry.
* The diagram scrolls when it should fit, or fits when it should scroll.

## Work through these in order

| **Check**                      | **What it means and what to do**                                                            |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Check the display mode         | Auto, Fixed, Max and Classic behave very differently. The table below says which to pick.   |
| Is height set?                 | Height only applies to modes that use it. Setting it elsewhere appears to do nothing.       |
| Is it very wide?               | Turn on native scrolling. Wide diagrams read better with scrollbars than with pan and zoom. |
| Is it small and blurry?        | Turn on Smart Scale, which stops small diagrams being stretched to fill the column.         |
| Should the whole space change? | Set it in the space settings instead of per macro.                                          |

| Classic  | Natural size, box hugs the diagram | Small diagrams, and draw.io parity      |

## A few things that catch people out

* Most macros are set to inherit, so the space setting is often the faster fix.
* Alignment does nothing in Fixed and Max, because those already span the column.
* A diagram nobody can read at any size is too big. Consider splitting it.
